Webster House describes itself as offering “living opportunities for independent-minded seniors who wish to retain their intellectual and cultural lives, and who want services without schedules.” The community has the look and feel of an elegant country club. High ceilings, two walls comprised of glass and cherry wood paneling give the foyer an upscale and architecturally interesting look. Floral arrangements follow suit by being mildly dramatic. All thirty-seven independent living units have a full kitchen. Residents purchase a unit as part of a refundable membership in the community, and pay a comprehensive monthly fee for meals, medical support, and an array of services and amenities. Underground parking is available for those who choose to drive; chauffeur service is available for those who do not. Webster House’s long-term care reinsurance plan covers off-site assisted living and skilled nursing care. The elegant building is secure and inviting. With a (year-round) heated pool, spacious common areas including a library and penthouse lounge, a well-maintained grand piano and a full-service concierge service for special requests and messages, residents can maintain their preferred lifestyle despite any additional needs they may have. The dining room is quite chic; its red and black swathes of color carry an Asian-inspired look. Webster House’s chef prepares dinners five nights per week, but residents can select in-room tray service on one of the remaining days. One evening a week residents must make their own dinner arrangements. Breakfast and lunch are not served at the facility. Small tables in the dining room are spaced sufficiently apart to make comfortable conversations possible. Residents and visiting musicians both make use of the beautiful piano. The weekly Seminar Series offers intriguing options. In March 2005, for example, residents and guests explored the history of the Stanfords with a well-known local historian; later in the month, they enjoyed a piano program featuring the works of Robert Schumann, as well as a lesser-known American composer.
