Sunrise of San Mateo belongs to a network of senior living communities throughout the U.S., Canada and England. Founded in 1981, it may this longevity, in part, that helps them accommodate so many needs: independent and assisted living, dementia care, nursing and rehabilitation, respite and hospice care are all available at this incredible location. The facility enjoys a steady stream of referrals due to its good reputation in the long-term care community.

The building is attractively decorated. A grand wrought iron staircase in the center of the main floor adds to the atmosphere, not unlike that of a genteel mansion. Maroon, white and floral patterns in the décor create a rich, cozy feeling. A unique array of attractive benches throughout the building provides practical resting areas.

One of the most unique features of the facility is the excellent care provided in the secured Alzheimer’s unit. The facility is prepared for the entire spectrum of dementia needs. The Sunrise Alzheimer’s philosophy is that staff steps into the residents’ world, not the opposite; staff members are there for residents no matter what time of day or night. It is not unusual to find them baking cookies together well after midnight. One room is set aside for over stimulated residents; the lights are low, the furniture is soft and there is a small, bubbling aromatherapy fountain to help soothe frayed nerves. The staff on this floor use tools such as feathers, colored fabric balls and wooden beads to assist residents’ sensory stimulation.

The Director of Community Relations is a clinical gerontologist who assists with grief counseling and other issues.

In addition to a full schedule of activities, one of the programs at Sunrise entails local high school students joining the seniors in a sewing circle. The items they create are donated to low-income individuals and families. The seniors serve as teachers to these students, reinforcing their sense of community, goodwill and self-worth.
