Canyon House is a one-story assisted living facility that specializes in serving individuals
with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Located in a quiet neighborhood, it is still close to the area’s major thoroughfares, making it easily accessible. This small facility has a number of quaint gardens and roomy patios, which allow residents to enjoy being outdoors quite often. Flowers are abundant, both in-and-out-of-doors, and the décor is very tasteful, customized by the talented couple who owns this facility. The atmosphere is busy and friendly—the staff members were in high spirits when we visited, laughing and enjoying themselves. Residents who have been distraught at other assisted living facilities have found a stable and caring home here. Perhaps the staff’s laughter implies a slightly greater tolerance for difference; perhaps other factors were at work. In any case, residents whose behavior is often objectionable may find it possible to relax here—and therefore thrive.

Canyon House actively promotes open and full communication as much as possible. The management team expects its richly diverse staff, many of whom are bilingual, to speak only English when on the premises, especially in the presence of residents. This practice sustains the residents’ sense of safety and reduces their stress levels.

Other aspects of Canyon House’ procedures reflect the care of its owners, who are dedicated to serving frail elders with dementia with hands-on involvement. While family and friends are always welcome and encouraged to visit, unknown visitors are screened carefully to minimize confusion of the residents and to sustain staff’s focus on tasks essential to quality care.
