Masonic Homes of California is comprised of ten structures spread out among a vast hilltop estate in Union City. Wild turkey and deer roam the 305-acre grounds, which accommodates walking, outdoor activities such as horseshoes, and meditation in a yurt complete with a soothing fountain. A striking brick building crowns the hill. A strong sense of history and tradition blankets Masonic Homes of California, which accepts individuals who have at least a five-year membership with the Masons, and are in good standing. Widows who meet this criteria may also apply. The waiting list typically runs about two years, so interested individuals should plan ahead. To enter the community, applicants may either assign seventy-five percent of their income and assets to the facility or pay the entrance fee followed by monthly fees, which depend on the level of care they require. Medical and dental services are separate with the second option. Low-income Masons may assign their SSA/SSI assets to receive care.Polished hardwood, gleaming brass and numerous antiques compose the décor in the brightly lit main building. Residents linger over glasses of wine at dinner in the formal dining room, where white linens contrast attractively with the dark wooden chairs and tables. Seating areas grace the broad hallways. The size and location of residents’ rooms and apartments depends upon the level of care they require; the campus offers independent and assisted living, dementia care and skilled nursing. Residents also have access to hospice services. We were delighted by several active residents of the skilled nursing unit, who prepared for the day by meticulously applying makeup. We also observed a group of residents departing for a tour of a teddy bear factory, as well as a number on their way to various volunteer assignments. Residents enjoy a plethora of activity areas including a well-stocked library, a ceramics studio, a carpentry workshop, a computer center and a resident-run clothing shop! There is a tangible sense of community at Masonic Homes.
