Sun City is a small region located within the city of Menifee, in the heart of Southern California and an hour from both Los Angeles and San Diego. Menifee is a medium-sized city of approximately 90,000 residents. A number of golf courses and dozens of parks offer many ways for Sun City’s seniors to engage with and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. According to Genworth’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey, costs for assisted living in Sun City, at $4,525 per month, are lower than the state average of $5,000 but slightly higher than the national average of $4,300. Average care costs for assisted living in neighboring states are either equal to or lower than costs in Sun City. Oregon’s costs are just slightly more each month, at $4,659, while Arizona’s costs drop to $3,900. Nevada has the lowest average care costs, at $3,595.
Costs for assisted living in other California cities vary widely. Redding, in the northern part of the state, has similar costs, at $4,500 per month, and costs in Fresno, halfway between Redding and Sun City, are $4,750, a slight increase. Costs in Los Angeles are higher still, at $5,000 per month, and costs continue to climb in Sacramento, to $5,395 per month. San Francisco, at $6,100, has some of the highest assisted living care costs in the state, while Bakersfield, at $3,613, has among the lowest, approximately $900 less each month than in Sun City.

California’s Department of Health Care Services has several Medi-Cal Waivers, including the Assisted Living Waiver. To qualify, seniors must already qualify for Medicaid, including its specific income eligibility requirements, and require a nursing level of care. Audiology assessment and treatment, dental services and cancer care are available. There is also a Geriatric Evaluation and Management Clinic, which provides sole primary care alongside a number of assessments and evaluations, including memory impairment and medication assessments.
