In comparison to neighboring states, Kentucky was the only state that had a monthly average less than the Cleveland area at $3,497 per month. Those with higher monthly average costs include Michigan ($4,000), Indiana ($4,100) and Pennsylvania ($3,913).
Monthly assisted living costs in Ohio vary greatly. The Cleveland area and Youngstown have the same costs at $3,575. In the southwest, Cincinnati costs around $4,245 per month, while just to the north, Dayton was at $4,455. The most expensive areas are Akron at $4,625 and the Canton area at $4,545, while Springfield is $4,079, and Columbus averages around $3,945.
Medicaid operates Ohio’s Assisted Living Waiver Program that helps pay for the cost of care in an assisted living community. The cost of care includes items like meals, housekeeping and personal hygiene. It also includes nursing and medication administration. Eligible seniors must be at least 65 years old and meet the income requirements for Medicaid.
