Harbored in a shady spot on Charlene Way, St. Gregory’s bright yellow facade is an inviting refuge. Past the secured gate, outdoor tables and chairs sit among rows of blooming flower boxes—the gardening handiwork of residents. The lobby hosts a colorful aquarium. We noticed that one group of residents had claimed the vacant nursing station for socializing; they appeared quite comfortable! The wall-to-wall carpeting is embedded with large patterns in muted grays and blues, a soothing design that was specially ordered for residents with dementia. Overhead fixtures combined with natural light suffuse the halls with a soft glow.

Residents’ rooms are fully furnished; attractive window treatments complement the lovely peach and blue color scheme. Residents craft memory box displays to hang outside their rooms. The dining area features a pretty china cabinet, hanging pictures, trinkets and shiny linoleum floors, all of which reminded us of a family dining room. The living room is also used for activities, so there is plenty of comfortable seating. The event calendar offers cognitive-stimulating activities, including reminiscence, memory games and cooking. Exercises such as stretching, walking and dancing are healthy physical alternatives.

One of St. Gregory’s most exceptional features is its outdoor area. Freshly cut lawns are peppered with robust shrubs, trimmed bushes and lofty trees, and residents’ green thumbs are clearly present in the groomed flowerbeds. The patio has been thoughtfully furnished with benches, stone tables and chairs. On warm days, the area is perfect for an outdoor barbeque. A handsome gazebo provides a shady rest stop for residents strolling the gardens.

The management and staff have an easygoing demeanor. Specially trained by the Alzheimer’s Association, the staff struck us as a knowledgeable and affectionate group. As we left the facility, the sound of residents singing sweetly filled the air; we couldn’t help but smile!
