Overview

Care Types: Assisted Living

Roaming the halls of Westwood Plaza Retirement Hotel, we encountered a group of people who lead purposeful, active lives. The administrator told us that despite the full activity schedule, many residents choose to occupy themselves during the day. Some volunteer at the nearby Museum of Tolerance, which hosts exhibits on the Holocaust and focuses on the major issues of intolerance that are part of everyday life. The residents we met all seemed to have a strong rapport with the administrator. Walking up the stairs, we met one man who has Parkinson’s; although sometimes he needs to use the elevator, on our visit he was having a “good” day and was able to take the stairs. Our tour guide made note of this and congratulated him warmly.

The well-maintained facility rests at the juncture of two busy thoroughfares. White rosebushes add a touch of outdoor elegance to the brick facade. The foyer, with its dark wooden sideboards, is reminiscent of an upscale hotel lobby. Wood wainscoting and artwork line the walls. Waitstaff take orders in the lovely dining room. Tables are strategically positioned to resemble the varied setup of an elegant restaurant. Tablecloths, fine china and gleaming silverware complete the look. We observed lunch being served and were impressed with portion sizes and presentation. Each meal offers salad, bread and dessert as well as alternatives for the entrée. Reuben sandwiches and gefilte fish were on the menu when we visited. Residents appeared to love the country and western trio who entertained during the meal. A variety of entertainers visit frequently. The activity schedule, with exercise, crafts, games and educational classes, appeals to varied interests. Outings to concerts, theaters, restaurants and shopping always garner excitement. The fire department comes regularly to give lessons in fire prevention and preparedness. Every month, the resident council convenes to discuss their concerns and desires.

Resident rooms, all private, occupy the top two floors. Solid colored rugs and artwork create an attractive canvas for residents to color with their personal touches. Some rooms have balconies overlooking the patio in the center of the building. This attractive area contains shaded wrought-iron tables, padded chairs and potted plants.
