Courtyard at Pine Creek and Reflections is nestled in a quiet middle-class neighborhood of Concord, just off of Monument Boulevard. A black roof overlaps the long structure, which is surrounded by old pine trees and three tall poplars. Yellow flowers blanket the facility’s perimeter. Sidewalks set back from the two-way street invite safe pleasure walking. Inside, pictures and decorations reflect a country motif. The plastic-covered furnishings are dated but comfortable and have been strategically arranged for the efficient use of wheelchairs and walkers. Flower arrangements and plants decorate corners and accent tables throughout the facility.

Residents’ rooms range from small to medium. Natural light supplements the soft artificial lighting in Reflections, the facility’s Alzheimer’s unit. Some of the rooms remain dim, however, perhaps due to the shade trees outside. In the main dining room, sheer curtains mute the sunlight from an entire wall of windows. Crisp linen and fresh flowers enhance the dining experience. The day of our visit featured baked sole with dill sauce, rice and mixed vegetables with a choice of four desserts! The kitchen staff uses fresh and healthful ingredients; even the staff enjoys the hearty meals at Courtyard. Reflections boasts a spacious dining room with high-back armchairs. The décor is simple and soothing.

The large common area is used for group activities. Sliding glass doors that lead to the spacious courtyard allow ample natural light. A library, activity parlor and country store round out the common areas. In Reflections, activities take place in the living room. One hallway hosts a café, where residents socialize over tea, coffee and periodically, ice cream floats! Many of the ground floor rooms access the center courtyard; three smaller courtyards add outdoor variety. Each features shaded patio seating. Barbeques always draw big crowds on warm summer afternoons. Pet visits and shopping are among residents’ favorite activities. In Reflections, musical entertainment and sing-alongs rank at the top of the list. Neighborhood volunteers often participate in the numerous activities.

Frail seniors with moderate to end-stage dementia will find an excellent home at Courtyard. The caregiver tenure averages about six years. The dementia staff is engaging and gentle, and we were impressed with the genuine care that marked their interactions with residents. The facility serves a wide spectrum of people; in fact, we learned of a fifty-year-old resident who was recovering from a major stroke that left him without speech and the use of his left side. Thanks to the efforts of Courtyard staff, the gentleman can now communicate his needs and, to a certain degree, move independently.
