Wayne Center For Nursing & Rehabilitation

During our tour, the administrator of the facility told us that although other nursing facilities were ahead in terms of technology, Wayne, a “nursing home with a heart,” would eventually catch up. The truth of these words hit home on our tour, as the building was undergoing much-needed renovations, but the interaction that we witnessed between staff and residents was pleasant and respectful.

The facility’s charm is evident right away: immediately to the left is an aviary, inside of which we saw a few residents enjoying the flutter of colorful birds. To the right, a fresh flower arrangement sat fragrantly in a vase. Farther along, a common area works double duty as both the dining room and activities space. Decorated with resident’s artwork, the area fans out into another aviary on its right side and an aquarium on its left. A small outdoor patio is located on the third floor. Natural light creates the illusion of more space in residents’ bedrooms. What really adds character is that some bring their own furnishings. During our visit, we glimpsed a current events group as it finished up a discussion; later, we observed residents enjoying a meal in the large dining area. Many were socializing with the nurse’s aides. We noticed some of the residents interacting with one another but others appeared a bit lethargic. Activities include adaptive games, intergenerational programs and entertainers. Occasionally a flutist visits residents in their rooms.
