The rich history of the Jewish community is ever present in Esther & Jacques Reutlinger Community: an impressive display of historical artifacts graces the entrance to the facility. The contemporary décor is set against an earthy color scheme. Plant arrangements are scattered throughout the building. Residents have plentiful seating areas for socializing; some feature TVs, others have pianos—one houses a lovely birdcage with finches.
Residents’ rooms are moderately sized. The Alzheimer’s unit features slightly smaller rooms with muted natural light. All residents are encouraged to decorate their rooms as they wish. Separate dining areas accommodate residents who need varying levels of assistance. All meals are kosher. Residents with Alzheimer’s enjoy a buffet service in a separate area. Natural light pours over the elegant, linen-draped tabletops dressed with fresh floral arrangements. Remnants of last season’s tomato crop enhance the groomed landscape of shrubbery and young trees in the patio adjacent to the first floor dining area. Another outdoor patio, used by the Alzheimer’s residents, is secured.

Residents enjoy a varied activities calendar; field trips and musical performances seem to be the two activities residents look forward to most. The fully stocked art studio serves as a creative nook; a few of the residents have work that is currently on exhibit at the De Young Museum in San Francisco! The environment is a supportive one. We observed a group of residents in wheelchairs who gathered around the nursing station on their way to an activity. One rather assertive resident called out her thanks to us as we scooted out of the way. Our guide introduced us to the residents that we passed on the tour, exhibiting genuine interest and concern for them at all times. Residents and staff work in tandem to make this a close-knit community. Reutlinger offers scholarships to low-income individuals on a case-by-case basis.
