The Gardens at Park Balboa is reminiscent of a California mission; the building’s stucco facade is awash in warm tones and is flanked by tropical plantings and trees. A lovely driveway divides a lush lawn and leads to the entrance. The facility is situated next door to a church. The outdoor area is a paradise of professional landscaping with well-groomed walking paths, shaded courtyards, fountains and a lovely pond alive with colorful koi.
A grand reception area with a grandfather clock and inviting armchairs welcomes visitors. Décor throughout is very tasteful and homey. The lovely restaurant-style dining room serves appetizing meals and boasts a fresh salad bar. A dessert cart makes the rounds at lunch and dinner, satiating even the sweetest sweet tooth. Residents overlook a rear courtyard with mature trees while they dine. A beautiful lounge area with cozy seating and a piano abuts the dining room, providing the perfect spot for chatting after supper. A large computer room offers Internet access. Several activity rooms round out the communal areas. A full activity schedule caters to these active seniors and includes card games, exercise classes, movies and bingo. Outside entertainment sometimes takes the form of concerts on Friday or Saturday nights. Resident rooms vary in size and most have balconies with views of the wonderful garden areas. Rooms are unfurnished, so residents can add personality to their spaces with furniture and memorable belongings. During our tour, we noticed warm and cheerful interactions between staff and residents.
Safe Haven is the facility’s secure dementia unit, which provides care and structure for this demographic. While Safe Haven accommodates twenty-five residents, the staff prefers to keep fewer residents here so that they can provide more personalized care. Shared or private rooms are available; all are furnished. Residents with dementia enjoy meals in their own large dining room. Activities designed for this group include monthly family visits, barbecues, parties and supervised picnics to the beach and local parks.
