Overview

Care Types: Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s Care

Arriving at Sunrise Assisted Living of Westtown is like pulling up to a picturesque summer estate in an active but quaint neighborhood. Intersecting cement walkways characterize the modest grounds, surrounded by open fields. A covered walkway leads to the front entrance, which branches off into a wraparound porch. Residents enjoy the rocking chairs outside and revel in luxury and comfort indoors. Rich maroon and hunter green tones saturate the interior. A stately fireplace sits at the heart of the main living room, tastefully furnished with matching window treatments and carpet. Several sitting areas with big-screen TVs and comfy furnishings are scattered throughout the many living spaces. The facility is drenched in sunlight from abundant windows and skylights. Distinguished accents such as flower arrangements and artwork punctuate the room while aquariums and aviaries bring even more life to the space. Bert, the gentle house dog, can generally be found roaming the common rooms.

The secure Reminiscence Neighborhood houses residents with dementia in a stimulating environment. The living, dining and activity rooms, separated only by half walls, form a central hub amid the bedrooms. Some of the décor has thematic undertones, with wedding dresses, baby dolls, and tools and gadgets. Staff members encourage an active integration within the community, but are sensitive to these residents’ need for downtime, using hand massages and aromatherapy to soothe the senses. Westtown is the first Sunrise facility to offer the Terrace Program, which provides structured programming for lower functioning residents who don’t quite belong in the Reminiscence Neighborhood. Hourly activity blocks involve residents in games, musical entertainment and afternoon social events. Westtown benefits from its proximity to West Chester University by attracting nursing students who are passionate, committed and eager to learn.

Residents without dementia live in large apartments with broad windows and wall-to-wall carpet. Some units have separate sleeping areas for more privacy. Shared bathrooms contain whirlpools. The elegant dining room is bright and cheerful. Menu selections offer a little something for everyone, with sandwiches and alternatives daily. On the day of our visit, the choices were liver and onions, roast pork and Swedish meatballs. The bistro serves beverages and snacks around the clock and also hosts occasional group games and manicure sessions.
