Overview

Care Types: Nursing Care, Assisted Living, Retirement

This area of the Bronx is akin to a slightly injured but resilient boxer who is looking to make a comeback. Despite some incredible odds, we’re rooting for the underdog. Most residents and staff hail from this predominantly Latino community. A strong bond is perceptible between all&#8212from security personnel to the hairdresser, to the nurses-cum-nuns to the administration&#8212and these close ties only add to the sense of happiness.

As part of the nonprofit Catholic Health Care system in New York, St. Vincent de Paul stresses the provision of care and services; less attention is paid to the details of décor, although maintenance and cleanliness are outstanding. From the onset, the large gray brick building surrounded by a tall wrought-iron fence appears solid, serious and safe. Light brown tile floors, wrought iron chandeliers and wood framed chairs lend a distinct Spanish flair to the lobby. Venturing further into the facility, however, a more utilitarian feel comes into play. Fluorescent lighting prevails. Plants, framed posters and pictures, and bulletin boards with photos and announcements impart a lived-in feel. Residents’ large rooms let in natural light from their many windows. The overall effect is warm and homey but without grand flourishes. Each floor has a dining room that is also used for activities. The bright, rectangular rooms feature banks of windows with sheer curtains and colorful swags. Each floor also has a lounge at the end of each hall. Fluorescent lighting illuminates the brightly painted therapy rooms. A separate recreation room without windows has a big-screen for viewing television programs and movies. Parties and some arts and crafts projects occur in this room as well. A small chapel with a daily mass encourages quiet reflection. Outside, a row of picnic tables beneath an overhang means residents can enjoy the outdoors even when summer storms loom in the distance. …. SHOW MORE

Alzheimer’s patients reside on a floor similar in layout and décor to the rest of the facility. The Snoezelen program is used to help these residents through sensory stimulation. On our visit, a very active recreation therapist called to residents by name in an effort to draw their attention and engage them. Safety measures include Wanderguard, alarmed exit doors and security cameras.
