The crowning glory of Saint Mary Manor is its gorgeous multistory chapel. Built in 1925, the chapel is adorned with colorful stained glass windows, majestic columns and a lavish altar. The majority of residents here are Catholic. Religious icons and statues reside throughout the center and its outdoor areas, which include verdant courtyards, numerous walkways, a small pond and a lovely picnic grove. An award-winning memory garden for Alzheimer’s patients showcases the mature trees that predate the center itself.
The center’s interior is equally pleasant. There are several community rooms with tasteful touches like grandfather clocks, decorative fireplaces and big-screen TVs. Four aquariums and several cages of chirping birds also inhabit the center. The impressive library has wooden bookcases, a curio cabinet filled with collectibles, a reading area and chess table. During our visit, we spoke to a ninety-four-year-old resident who was busy typing his “book” and checking his work with a magnifier.
In the main portion of the facility, residents furnish their own rooms, and choose the color carpet they want. Windows provide lots of natural light. Apartments have small concrete patios where residents can tend to potted plants, sit and relax, and view the lovely inner courtyards. There is also a secure unit for Alzheimer’s residents, who have a separate dining room. Memory boxes filled with trinkets like wedding and family photos sit at the entranceway to each resident’s room. The rooms are spacious and comfortable.
The multipurpose dining room boasts a big-screen TV and views of the courtyard. Wood floors gleam beneath chandelier lighting. There is also a beautiful banquet hall used for large parties, birthdays, socials and bingo. A community room holds a projector TV, DVD player, self-rise chairs and a piano. The menu of activities at Saint Mary Manor is vast and varied. Residents can join in faith sharing, current events discussions, reading groups, cooking classes, manicures and musical entertainment. Residents with Alzheimer’s participate in cognitive games, sing-alongs, news and nostalgia, yoga and morning stretching. Rosary, mass, musical entertainment and socials are held on Sundays for all residents. Another great touch is a monthly support group for families and community members.
It speaks well that many staff have worked here for years. They seemed very friendly and professional, and were very engaging and caring toward residents.
