Salem Lutheran Home is a nonprofit facility that boasts a month-to-month rental option, an unusual offering for a CCRC. The gated five-acre campus is located along Oakland’s historic 23rd Avenue. Gray shingles cover the mansard roof of the white main building, which houses independent and assisted living, skilled nursing and The Terrace, Salem Lutheran’s dementia unit. The grounds also include cottages that are primarily for independent living, and Salem Woods apartments, which accommodate both independent and assisted living residents. Peach and mint blend softly all throughout the interior of the main building, where comfortable furnishings comprise convenient seating areas.

Residents enjoy a number of delicious options at dinner, including fried chicken, baked salmon, hot roast beef sandwiches and shrimp creole. Dementia residents choose from similar options in The Terrace.A couple of assisted living residents visited in a common area on our visit and we also observed amiable staff members chatting with a group of skilled nursing residents. The Terrace’s bright, cheerful activity room hosts numerous activities including dancing, gardening, and arts and crafts. The facility features wide, brightly lit hallways; some are furnished with seating areas. A large birdcage housing a flock of small birds occupies a hall in the SNF.
