Overview

Care Types: Nursing Care

Rittenhouse Pine Center sits adjacent to a low-income housing unit with the same name; however, the two have no affiliation. The center, situated amidst a bevy of middle-class residences, is a brick building with vinyl siding. Trees and greenery surround the facility, and colorful pansies adorn the base of a flagpole. Outdoor areas include an attractive garden, walking paths, a patio with a barbecue, and plenty of seating.

The facility is in the midst of ongoing renovations, which will elicit more color and warmth throughout. The dining room is also used for activities and watching TV. The dining experience is pleasant and upscale for a nursing facility, with tablecloths and real glassware and cutlery. Sandwiches are always available. On the day of our visit, the menu included mushroom soup, tuna on wheat, and chocolate cake. Well-lit common rooms host dining, activities and meetings. A wide variety of activities are available, including trivia games, men’s and women’s groups, arts and crafts, coffee socials, manicures, prayer services, and rosary and Communion on Sundays. Religious officials visit the center regularly to attend to residents’ spiritual needs. …. SHOW MORE

Comfortable rooms feature wood storage cabinets. The private rooms have showers and typically are reserved for residents with special circumstances (e.g., those with open wounds). However, these rooms may also be requested by private-pay residents. Each floor has a central bath with a whirlpool tub in addition to the standard tub and shower. Visitors are welcome twenty-four hours a day, and are encouraged to bring children and pets.

Staff gives a welcome bag to new residents, which contains an information sheet, puzzle book, notebook and pen, playing cards, toiletries, and information about the Partner Program, which matches staff members to specific rooms and their residents, offering an extra dose of personal attention. One staff member even overrode program policy to remain partnered with a resident with whom he shared an interest in football, even after the resident’s room was changed. We were thrilled to hear of this personal attention and display of warmth. Rittenhouse Pine Center accepts patients with dementia, but because there is no specialized dementia unit, the facility is locked.
