Overview

Care Types: Assisted Living, Retirement

After entering the gated facility grounds, the idea of growth is nothing short of insistent. The entry is like an atrium, with its walls and ceiling made entirely of glass. The natural world is kept at the forefront with most of the decorating choices; innumerable types of potted foliage flourish everywhere. Although there are numerous aquariums, the most striking one is in the spacious lobby: it boasts huge orange Oscars and goldfish against a deep blue background. Framed photographs of animals and prints of gardens, lighthouses and seascapes dot the interior. Large windows in residents’ rooms are lined with potted flowers and plants. Furnishings are dark wood. A comfy easy chair, bulletin board and large calendar featuring recreational events add elements of domesticity.

Each floor has two comfortably furnished TV lounges. Venetian blinds diffuse the natural light. Conversation areas near the ends of each hallway feature an arrangement of cozy armchairs. Aviaries on each floor house fluttering purple, yellow, and orange birds. The gated patio hosts barbecues and other social events beneath the shade of large umbrellas. The outdoor garden is beautifully landscaped. The Alzheimer’s unit is identical to other floors, save for the street signs in the hallways that we were told “add a familiar element.” Another thoughtful addition is the bird chirping that plays, rather than a blaring alarm, when a resident attempts to enter elevator. …. The center’s partnership with the Brooklyn Botanic Garden guarantees that easily maintained plants and flowers are kept throughout the facility. Portable seeding stations allow residents to start plants, vegetables, herbs and spices from seed. Once matured, the seeds are eventually replanted outside. In spring and summer, the garden is in full bloom with a wide variety of plants, vegetables and herbs. A culinary program sees residents washing, peeling and chopping vegetables while the recreation staff utilizes these ingredients in preparing meals. An exercise, literature, and music program ensure the mind and body also grow. Excursions to performances, parks, sporting events and restaurants are regularly scheduled. Natural light filters in through stained glass windows in the peaceful meditation room and combined chapel.
