Overview

Care Types: Assisted Living

Mother Gertrude Home is located off a busy urban street. The facility is staffed and run by Catholic nuns, and welcomes all denominations. Statues depicting birds and ducks add whimsy to the well-maintained lawn, which is dotted with orange flowers and lavender bushes. Red stairs bound up to the automatic doors. The entrance arch has a lovely tile pattern on it. Inside the waiting room, pictures of religious figures such as the Pope hang between stained-glass windows. Bookcases house smaller religious-themed paintings. A list of all residents’ birthdays is hung on one wall. Soothing earth tones pervade the décor.

Light brown carpet rolls out towards residents’ rooms. Hallways house photographs of residents and pictures of Israel. Residents’ rooms are quite spacious but manage to retain a cozy feel. All residents bring in their own furnishings. Two full-sized closets in each room means storage space is never a problem. The on-site gift shop sells sundries such as toothpaste, floss and soap, along with religious figurines and keepsake ornaments. Pink tablecloths and yellow flowers add cheer to the dining room. A fish tank sits in a corner. Seating is assigned. The enclosed patio is charming—one side contains a mural depicting the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. Three cement fountains spout water. Porcelain animals and religious icons abound. Daily Mass is held in the small chapel—which is by far the best-attended activity! Reading is also popular, and the facility provides ample reading material. Checkers and bingo often gather crowds in the common room. Every Monday an instructor leads residents in a music class and a physical fitness course. Shopping trips occur once a month.

Our tour guide seemed to have a healthy amount of pride in the facility. We noted that residents were quite relaxed and for the most part happily engulfed in quiet, solitary activities such as knitting, needlepoint or watching TV. A sense of stability is apparent in Mother Gertrude Home—the nuns seem efficient at caregiving and seeing to residents’ needs. Most residents seem to require only a bit of assistance, as the population is not very frail.
