Imperial Care Center

Imperial Care Center sits on Ventura Boulevard, one of the busiest streets in the San Fernando Valley. To address the high volume of traffic competing for metered spots, the facility provides valet parking. A pretty flower bed marks the front entrance. Studio City Convalescent Hospital, an adjacent sister facility, shares a large patch of land behind both buildings. Trees shade the grounds, dotted with flowers, benches and gazebos. The facility is secured beyond the reception area. We visited around the holidays and were delighted by the extravagant display. Christmas and Hanukkah decorations created a virtual winter wonderland. The facility places a large emphasis on the role of families in their residents’ lives. They often encourage family guests around the holidays.

Residents who require feeding assistance eat in a separate dining room. Both dining rooms, which double as activity rooms, contain round tables covered with pastel cloths. Artwork and plastic flower arrangements are subtle and attractive. A second-floor patio is arranged with comfy furniture and umbrella-topped tables. As we moved through the building, we observed several staff members engaging groups of residents. One caregiver read to an attentive crowd, while another led an exciting game of bingo. Dementia programming involves memory-enhancing games and activities. The center focuses on ability, rather than disability, and encourages active involvement to foster a sense of belonging and well-being. Shared rooms accommodate two to four residents per room. Decorative curtains separate the beds, offering a little privacy. Large windows allow abundant natural light.
