Care Types: Nursing Care

The Fairfield Division of Hebrew Home for the Aged radiates with positive energy. Hebrew Home was established in 1917 to provide shelter for Harlem’s homeless Jewish seniors and is highly regarded among New York’s Jewish community. Riverdale, the Bronx neighborhood surrounding the Fairfield Division, includes a mix of houses, apartment buildings and high-rises. Mature trees and manicured bushes scattered across velvety lawns issue an air of suburbia. The white brick facility is lined with windows and sits apart from the other buildings on the campus.

Our guide referred to the facility many times with an affectionate sense of ownership and pride. Warmth and compassion mark the staff’s attitude toward residents, who hail from all over New York City and Westchester County. Some interacted quietly with staff and each other; many kept to themselves. A Men’s Council meeting was in progress. Only a small percentage of the resident population is male, and the council gives the men an outlet to discuss their interests and concerns amongst themselves. …. SHOW MORE

The cheerful interior features several comfortable seating areas. In the lobby, lamps and recessed lighting shed soft light on the vivid fish that fill a large aquarium. Photographs and graphic prints are among the many pieces of artwork displayed throughout the facility. An inviting living room features overstuffed chairs, upholstered couches, a piano and a fireplace. Books and a TV offer entertainment and relaxation. Wooden tables and credenzas tie into the country décor. Sheer curtains and swags dress the large windows in residents’ spacious rooms, where pastel walls and light-colored furnishings add to the airy feel. Residents may bring in furnishings as long as they meet fire-code regulations. Curtains around each resident’s bed allow some privacy. Fairfield Division boasts numerous dining rooms; the maroon upholstery creates a luxe backdrop. All meals are kosher. Residents’ families may use the kitchen to prepare food they’ve brought to share with loved ones. We were very pleased to meet the upbeat activity director on our tour. The well-organized activity room reminded us of a classroom due to the stimulating mix of plants, birds, aquariums, arts and crafts projects, and photo collages. The roof garden offers comfortable seating and gorgeous views. The grounds include a special area for dementia residents called “Memory Park.” The plantings are all different colors, textures and scents, and the area is festooned with items that spark memories, such as a boardwalk and an old-fashioned clothesline.
