Overview

Care Types: Independent Living, Adult Day Care

The Matthew B. Rosenhaus adult day health care program is located in Findley House, the independent living facility at Daughters of Jacob Geriatric Center. The program area is orderly and cheerful, if a bit dingy-looking. Plants, silk flowers, photographs and artwork crafted by the participants, including paintings and clay sculptures, spruce up the atmosphere. Banners and strings of lights lend a party-like atmosphere to the largest room, which is lavender from head to foot—or, at least, from the upholstery and table linens to the walls. A stage and two pianos accommodate outside entertainers. The director spoke with pride about her efficient staff. The nursing staff works closely with participants’ primary doctors to coordinate care, and a doctor and a podiatrist visit weekly. A recreation therapist is also on board. Clients begin each day with exercise. Dancing, music and board games are favorite activities. Vegetables grown by participants contribute to a healthful breakfast and lunch. The chef prepares “tastings” of new ethnic dishes; the favored options are then added to the menu. Participants playfully joked about winning or grumbled about losing as they played bingo. Shopping trips include ethnic-specific destinations, such as Korean markets, to meet participants’ desires. The facility’s capacity is eighty while daily attendance is approximately thirty; participants include Spanish, English and Korean speakers. The staff predicts the number of Korean participants will grow as knowledge of the program spreads; this is the ethnic majority of the surrounding neighborhood.
