Overview

Care Types: Nursing Care

This county facility is home to eighteen buildings, five of which are residential. The rest are used for administration and operations. Generators mean that the entire campus will still have power in the event of an emergency. The older buildings are square red brick structures, while one of the newest buildings is a white high-rise. Grassy areas spring up everywhere a building or road doesn’t preclude it. A fleet of vans transports residents across the campus. The outdoor security gate is constantly staffed.

The physical therapy area takes up the bottom floor of the newest building along with a café. Resident rooms are adequately sized and simply furnished&#8212some of the newer ones offer conveniences like built-in drawers. Common rooms are abundant. Two of the buildings have secured dementia units with outdoor areas; both units boast bigger rooms and more private space compared to other portions of the facility. Every building has its own outdoor area&#8212and a gardening club to boot! Vegetables from the garden, planted and tended by residents, make their way onto dinner plates as well. Residents are given two choices at every meal and can always opt for a sandwich. Food preferences are obtained upon admission so that residents’ favorite foods make a menu appearance. Residents who required feeding assistance were well attended to. …. SHOW MORE

Fair Acres residents are in varying health states, but everyone seems to receive personal attention. In fact, all wheelchair users are repositioned every two hours. Every resident undergoes an initial assessment in which a mobility range is decided upon; this means that they are not in wheelchairs unless absolutely necessary. Residents are expected to walk to their ability, which we were very glad to hear, as this is not always the case. Our guide boasts a twenty-four-year tenure at the facility. This type of longevity no doubt contributes to the smoothly run operation. Individual needs are taken into account, deflating any preconceived notions of a county institution. Each building has a resident council that attends to the community’s needs as well. The council meets monthly and each department head’s attendance is mandatory. As our guide put it, “The residents decide what they want. We just work here.”

A friendly, even familial atmosphere was evident throughout our tour&#8212this could be in part due to the number of married couples who live here. Bingo, bowling, cooking, ceramics, gardening, Jazzercise are among the most popular activities. A variety of clubs exist, including one devoted to pinochle, while another is a women-run woodworking club. The cooking club undertakes food preparation while staff does the actual cooking. About twenty “prep chefs” can be accommodated at once, and spectators may look on from an adjoining lounge. Billiard tables and a large-print library offer other forms of entertainment. With 349 yearly trips, each resident gets roughly one monthly trip to places like an arboretums, malls, parks and shops. Chaperoned dementia patients join the rest of the group in activities. Residents may be signed out for up to thirty days for family visits; in turn, family members may visit at all times.
