Overview

Care Types: Nursing Care

The Earlwood, LLC sits on a quiet tree-lined street among other medical buildings and long-term care facilities. Welcoming touches such as the solid oak doors that are decorated by windows soften the building’s exterior. A bright blue awning advertises the facility’s short-term rehab program. Inside, the wood floors sparkle. A few comfortable chairs and green plants poke in and out of the foyer. On our visit, the resident cat sat regally by the doorway to the patio, opposite the foyer entrance, surveying the comings and goings. Gold wallpaper is imprinted with designs from nature. The natural aspect continues to the center of this facility, as the building surrounds an outdoor patio garden. A large bubbling fountain provides soothing background noise for residents when they relax in one of the many seating areas. The patio has a tropical air, thanks to the colorful blooms and large palm trees that provide shade. The patio hosts the annual summer luau. During our visit, two residents were receiving a morning shave and hair trimming while enjoying the balmy weather. Sliding glass doors in residents’ rooms access either the patio or a walkway. Residents or family members often use this area to tend a small garden box containing flowers or plants. A personal touch is apparent in residents’ rooms, which run from moderately sized to large; we glimpsed many photographs, bulletin boards and other mementos on display.

The entire facility is flooded with natural light that streams in from the many windows. The dining room doubles as an activity space. The lovely Fireside Room can be used for private meals or meetings, but must be reserved in advance for guest meals. The room is also used by residents who do not require feeding assistance and wish to have a family-style lunch with others. Occasionally the facility highlights its varied menu by putting on candlelit dinners for residents. …. SHOW MORE

Our morning visit found the facility abuzz with activity. Staff was dispensing medicine, changing beds and starting their day in an amicable way with residents. Several staffers greeted us as we toured and the ones we chatted with took the opportunity to tell us how much they enjoyed their jobs. We also watched a sing-along and our tour guide explained that the residents adore musical activities above all others. Other well-attended activities include ice cream socials, wheelchair strolls, arts and crafts, trivia games and religious services. Transportation to medical appointments or personal outings is arranged through outside vendors at the resident’s expense. A six-month to one-year waiting list currently exists for the long-term care rooms.
