Tucked away from the street, Ditmas Park Care Center is a quiet refuge in a residential Flatbush neighborhood. The weathered awning over the entry was a bit off-putting, but once we entered the facility, the efforts of a recent renovation won us over. The lobby boasts new wood paneling, diamond-shaped mosaics in the beige tile floors, ornate frames bordering lovely paintings and posh yet comfortable furnishings. The recently added aviary attracted many resident birdwatchers on the day of our visit.

Dark wood dominates the closet doors, moldings, headboards and nightstands in residents’ rooms. Ivory wallpaper balances the natural light. Curtain partitions in the rooms afford residents a bit of privacy. The gleaming tiled floors in the spacious dining area reflect the daylight that pours in and the well-worn furnishings here clued us in that the area is favored by residents. Visiting musicians frequent the facility at lunchtime. Frosted glass sconces cast a glow over the broad hallways. In the Alzheimer’s unit, the centrally located nursing station gives staff members a clear vantage point of residents. …. SHOW MORE

Ditmas Park Care Center features an “Activities of Daily Living” room for its short-term residents. Prior to being discharged, short-term residents are required to overnight there to demonstrate proficiency in daily activity performance. The room is fully equipped with the conveniences of home, including a living room, bedroom and full kitchenette.
