Overview

Care Types: Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s Care

Lush green grass is cradled in the curve of the driveway leading to the building’s entrance. Beneath the portico stands a small fountain and wrought-iron park benches—the perfect spot to take in the view of palm trees, philodendrons and assorted flowers and plantings. Red tile tops Aegis of Granada Hills. Located on a relatively quiet residential street, the building is just around the corner from a shopping mall. A pole flies the American and California flags.

The interior of the facility mirrors the outdoor landscaping in its beauty and attention to detail. Beyond the impressive reception area lies the living room with its grand piano, fireplace and majestic chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling. At the time of our visit, we observed several residents chatting over coffee here. The bistro offers up snacks and java all day long. Green, beige and gold tones compose the décor in the lovely library complete with reading material, a pool table and a second fireplace. The activity room contains a stove for cooking lessons, and the movie theater houses soft leather chairs and a popcorn machine. Activities don’t stop there—birthday parties, adult education classes, live entertainment, exercise sessions, dancing, bingo and arts and crafts are all mainstays. The resident council often helps determine the types of outings that occur. There are regular trips to the beach, restaurants and museums.

There is a private dining room, which is perfect for residents and their guests, as well as the spacious main dining room. Food appears nutritious and varied—fresh bread baked daily is an Aegis hallmark. On the day of our tour, lunch was potato leek soup with tuna salad sandwiches; dinner was spaghetti with meatballs. Cocktail hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays draw crowds to nibble on hors d’oeuvres and sip beverages. Summer barbecues take place on the large wraparound patio. Well-tended trees, seating, potted plants, flowers and fountains are the backdrop to this pleasant spot. Resident rooms have pleasant views of the outdoor gardens or mountains, and each contains a memory box of residents’ personal keepsakes outside each door. Some have full kitchens.

The second floor houses two secure Alzheimer’s units. Key codes at each door provide added security; all windows are alarmed and monitored. Resident rooms are studios similar to those in the rest of the facility. The outdoor patio contains all sorts of items in which residents can immerse themselves in the activities of daily living—a faux bus stop, a clothesline with clothespins, and even an old Ford automobile in an open garage! Inside, an area with baby clothes, dolls, wedding apparel and tactile art on the walls helps create an element of familiarity for residents. Special interests and hobbies are incorporated into the activity schedule, which includes outings to local places of interest.

Staffers don blue polo shirts and khaki pants, and appear to run a tight ship and care for residents well. Our tour guide was very friendly to each resident we encountered on our tour. When we visited the Alzheimer’s unit, one resident seemed a bit agitated until our tour guide hugged and kissed her and starting talking to her. The reassurance the resident felt was reflected in her smile.
