A long ranch-style building shelters Barrington Court atop a gentle slope overlooking El Pintado Road. Visitors have access to a small parking lot. The interior is immaculate. The spare, elegant décor presents very few distractions for Alzheimer’s residents. The furnishings are in excellent condition. Tables and chairs sit in front of a big-screen TV in the activity room. The dining room, also used for activities, features a piano. The menu is comprised of hearty offerings; a typical meal might include steak with rice and mixed vegetables, followed by peach shortcake. Residents love to snack on cookies freshly baked by the kitchen
staff. Natural light pervades the dining area from a wall of windows, highlighting the gleaming tiles. Framed artwork hangs from the peach and cream walls.
Handrails border the broad hallways, which are painted in shades of pink and peach. Residents’ small rooms feature practical amenities including grab bars, spacious closets and hospital beds. The bathrooms feature walk-in showers with bench seating. Large windows present views of the grounds or the inner courtyard, a modestly sized secure area that residents may enjoy at any time of day or night. Pink and purple flowers border the walkway, alongside manicured shrubs, contributing to the area’s appeal.
We found the staff amiable and professional. Thanks to the facility’s small capacity, the staff is able to provide more one-on-one care to residents than is the norm. The full-time activity director leads residents in a number of mentally and physically stimulating activities. The residents particularly enjoy listening to musical performances and caring for the facility’s two cats.
