Bainbridge Adult Health Care Center

Approximately 100 participants attend Bainbridge Adult Day Health Care Center daily; the facility hummed with activity on our visit. Plants thrive in the sunny lobby, where a group of participants played cards. Another group played dominoes. A guest speaker gave a lecture in the dining area, while other participants underwent physical therapy in the gym. One occupational therapist conducted memory exercises for a responsive group of dementia participants, who also enjoy creative storytelling.Participants delight in regular outings to museums and other artistic and cultural facilities; a recent tour of Manhattan’s Federal Reserve Bank was well-attended. The diverse recreational offerings include exercise, current events discussions, creative writing and classes on topics ranging from computers and cooking to health and wellness. Social workers teach relaxation techniques to reduce stress, while the nursing staff employs aromatherapy to alleviate pain and reduce blood pressure. The registered dietician takes participants to grocery stores to teach them how to understand food labels and make wise nutritional choices. Participants feast on two kosher meals and a snack each day in the spacious, brightly lit dining room, which is also used for activities. The center accommodates an impressive fifteen therapeutic diets! Participants bask in the sun on benches and chairs in the enclosed patio; ornamental shrubs and a trellis adorn the small outdoor area. Bainbridge recently opened a Snoezelen room. This multisensory environment, supervised by an occupational therapist, provides increased stimulation for participants with dementia. The room is also used for relaxation groups and stress reduction.
