Overview

Care Types: Nursing Care

Beth Abraham Health Services is part of the vast network of health care services and long-term care facilities owned by the nonprofit Beth Abraham Family of Health Services. The neighborhood, Pelham Parkway, is characterized by an ethnically diverse population, art deco apartment buildings and wide tree-lined streets. The Bronx Zoo and Bronx Botanical Gardens are nearby. Circular skylights and beautiful light fixtures illuminate the lobby&#8212the blue-and-green granite floor and cherrywood art deco furnishings with chrome detail are stunning. A major renovation of the three buildings that compose the skilled nursing facility was underway at the time of our visit. Period sconces and overhead fixtures brightened the renovated areas, where pale doorframes and molding complemented the pastel walls, wooden doors and matching cabinetry.

Kitchenettes, cheerful dining and activity rooms and comfortable lounges are located on each floor. Large windows and high ceilings create an airy feel in residents’ spacious rooms. The newly renovated rooms feature locked closets. The main floor houses a vast auditorium. Residents enjoy playing pool in the recreation room, which features a display illustrating Beth Abraham’s history. Residents may check out books and use the computers in the library. The main lounge, which is somewhat dim, accesses the expansive furnished patio. …. SHOW MORE

We were introduced to several staff members, who projected an aura of self-assurance with their firm handshakes. The facility had a lively air due to the large number of residents moving about, either with aides or on their own. We walked with one resident of the facility’s dementia unit, where the programming focuses on sensory stimulation and involves nursing, nutrition, music therapy, rehabilitation, social work and therapeutic recreation. Residents’ family members are encouraged to take advantage of the counseling and support groups provided.

One resident of the rehabilitation wing who had suffered a severe stroke told us that her doctors said she would never walk or talk again. She then proudly informed us that she now was able to tell us the story thanks to her speech therapist. One special aspect of Beth Abraham is the organization’s focus on music therapy&#8212singer Moby is on their board of directors! Many residents take part in Music Has Power, a trademarked program that promotes the healing benefits of music.
