Overview

Care Types: Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s Care

We all have our bad days. Such was the case of one resident who made this statement during our visit to Laurel Canyon Retirement Community. Upon hearing the resident’s proclamation, a concerned staff member immediately responded, hugging her and offering reassurance. The resident clearly appreciated the gesture and her spirits seemed to lift. This interaction was representative of the attentiveness we observed throughout our tour. The current management has been in place for seven years, which likely attests to the strong, well-managed program here. Outside, a red sign bearing the facility’s name is the single element that sets the gray building apart from the surrounding office and apartment buildings lining the busy street.

The interior comes alive with the retro stylings of vintage movie posters of old silver-screen favorites like Clark Gable and Greta Garbo. A colorful parrot converses daily with residents from his caged post in the lobby. Comfortable leather couches share this space. Resident rooms are moderately sized with ample closet space and large windows that allow sunlight to pour in. Most rooms come unfurnished, so residents can personalize with treasured belongings. Private bathrooms have grab bars and emergency call systems.

Old Hollywood beckons again in the bright and spacious dining room, with pictures of stars and starlets reminding residents of their youth. Cheerful red tablecloths cover tables set for four. Floor-to-ceiling windows and an entire mirrored wall make the room appear even larger. Laurel Canyon will accommodate any special diet based on a dietician’s assessment. The weekly menu is displayed prominently in the dining room, and residents are welcome to request an alternative should the day’s choice not be to their liking. On the day of our visit, the entrées included roast beef and baked chicken with a side of vegetables. Two snacks are provided daily, as well as beverage and dessert choices at mealtime.

A wall of bookshelves houses the library’s reading material. Leather couches and potted plants make for a homey atmosphere. The multipurpose activity room contains long wooden tables, perfect for playing board games or working puzzles. Four arcade-style video games await play by deft residents. Physical activity is a prime focus at this facility. The active group of residents participates in various forms of exercise each day. The facility arranges weekly trips to sites around the city and scenic drives, both of which are popular with residents. Current events discussions and card games are steady favorites. A well-maintained patio with two sets of patio furniture offers a verdant getaway for residents who just want to relax and enjoy the pleasing sounds of the fountain.
