Aegis Living Moraga

Sitting back off Country Club Drive, Aegis of Moraga is a white and tan ranch-style structure surrounded by groomed lawns, potted evergreens and blossoming cyclamen. Wooden benches provide rest stops for residents strolling the well-maintained paths and sidewalks around the facility. A concierge welcomes visitors in the lobby, where the warm chandelier glow imparts an upscale ambience reminiscent of a five-star hotel. The striped and floral upholstered furniture is comfortable and attractive. A small alcove with rattan furnishings provides a clear vantage point of the lobby. The Alzheimer’s unit, Life’s Neighborhood, has its own secured entrance. A departure from the main area, the décor is a thoughtful montage of period pieces that aid reminiscence. Hanging photos of country homes, pastoral scenes, social gatherings and even WWII planes add a homelike quality.

Residents’ rooms are airy and bright. Extra-wide doorways, high ceilings and ample storage space provide cozy living quarters in the main assisted living area. Life’s Neighborhood boasts similar accommodations, in addition to safety features such as window and door alarms and motion detectors, to deter residents from wandering. Contrasting color in the bathroom helps residents with depth perception deficits. Hanging shadow boxes add personal touches to each room; several residents displayed pieces that they had completed in the house art class. Residents take full advantage of the library, game room, lounge areas and activity parlor. A second floor retreat overlooking the lobby is a favorite gathering area for residents who enjoy watching the comings and goings of the facility.

The outdoor courtyard features expansive grounds with sprawling oak trees, grassy lawns and colorful blooms. A three-tiered fountain is a delightful addition. Alzheimer’s residents use their green thumbs in their secured courtyard. A bus stop frame and antique automobile, both situated in the garden, add whimsical elements to the environment.

Aegis’ atmosphere is light and cheerful. A group of sleepy-looking residents surprised us with animated smiles and greetings as they passed us in the hall. We observed one resident, a former teacher, engaged in one of her favorite pastimes as she read aloud to her caregiver. One passing gentleman paused a moment to chat with our tour guide before leaving us with kisses on our cheeks! Residents and staff shine in this close-knit community.
