A quiet periphery of family homes, a seldom-traveled street and vivid Flushing Meadow-Corona Park across the way all contribute to Rego Park’s optimal locale. Although the facility is easily accessible from the Long Island Expressway, it is thankfully spared all of the noise and unsightliness. A small glass doorway leads to the modest lobby, where shiny linoleum floors reflect the pastel hues on the walls.
Residents’ shared rooms are considerably larger than the private ones; all are equipped with bedside tables and tall closet cabinets. Even the simplest décor is enhanced by the warm sunlight peeking in through oversized windows. Each floor has a dining area also used for activities. When we arrived, residents were finishing lunch and rearranging the tables for an afternoon activity. The rehab area boasts an impressive setup of strength training equipment, utilizing multiple surfaces—including gravel, carpet and rubberized turf and stairs for walking and climbing exercises—as well as the front half of a vehicle to practice entering and exiting a car. …. Rego Park maintains two outdoor patios; the back patio hosts group barbecues and activities, and the front patio overlooks the park. Either one can be accessed from the second floor. The staff seemed well-informed of the day’s schedule. Each staff member completes a significant amount of onsite training, including a sort of sympathy training wherein staff members are made to endure uncomfortable situations, such as sitting in hard chair or drinking copious amounts of fluid without being able to relieve their bladders, to simulate the discomfort that residents experience. When we learned of these unusual but seemingly effective methods, it was clear why the staff prides themselves on understanding their residents.
