An abundance of beautiful plantings marks the entrance to this long brown building. A tidy reception area with comfortable chairs greets visitors to Astoria Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Crisp white walls cover most of the facility, leaving a surprisingly non-sterile feel. At the start of our tour, the facility’s administrator immediately welcomed us. In fact, all of the staff we encountered, from registered nurses to cooks, were extremely friendly and helpful both to us and, especially important, to the residents.
The facility boasts six terrific patios, all very beautiful with lush trees, plantings and flowers. Orange roses and tiny yellow flowers dot the ground covering at the largest patio. With its fountains and sculptures, this patio plays host to holiday dinners and social activities. During our tour, we observed residents socializing in one of three dining rooms while they waited for lunch. The largest of the three is for residents who require assistance eating; here, comfortable pink chairs sit on exceptionally clean floors. The kitchen is organized and immaculate. Atriums filled with colorful finches are housed throughout the facility. Resident rooms are filled with personal belongings, and all have windows or sliding glass doors that lead to outdoor patios.
