St. John Kronstadt Convalescent Center is set against a hillside in a quiet Castro Valley neighborhood. A gold Russian turret is perched atop the building, which was originally constructed to serve a Russian-Greek Orthodox community. The interior is decorated in shades of pink and beige; however, an upcoming remodeling project promises an entirely new look—all white. Residents’ rooms are spacious. Attractive bedspreads, blue window treatments and comfortable furnishings lend homey elements to the otherwise institutional facility.
The activity area is also used for dining; it bustled with excitement on the day of our visit, as residents and staff devised costumes for the Halloween festivities. One resident completed her cat costume with false eyelashes. Others listened to the visiting musician play the tuba. Several activities are geared towards the Russian population within the house—Russian tea parties, Russian audio recordings of Bible stories and Russian ballets. The environment is a familial one. Although the population is predominantly Russian, all cultures are welcomed within this close-knit community. One resident hosted his grandson’s wedding on the facility’s deck, sharing the momentous celebration with his fellow residents. The camaraderie within the house is tangible. St. John’s is very much a part of the larger community outside its doors.
