The county seat of Muskingum County, Zanesville, is a small town with a population of 25,000 that includes roughly 4,400 seniors ages 65 and older. Neighboring state averages are lower: Kentucky has the lowest costs, at a savings of $801 per month, and seniors in West Virginia pay $500 less monthly. Assisted living costs in Indiana are approximately $118 less per month than in Zanesville.
Compared with Zanesville’s prices, most other cities in Ohio are less expensive. Two exceptions are Cincinnati and Dayton, where the average costs are $4,750 and $5,245, respectively. Elsewhere, prices are lower: Mansfield, at $3,570, has some of the lowest costs anywhere, and Cleveland’s prices are slightly higher, at $3,950. Youngstown’s costs, at $4,038, are still roughly $500 less.
Ohio’s Assisted Living Waiver is a Medicaid program for those who already meet Medicaid’s income and eligibility requirements. This program will cover the costs so that recipients cover only “room and board” expenses. Local seniors ages 60 and older are invited to weekday lunches at one of three congregate dining sites for a suggested donation of $3.00. Individuals can come to the Center to have their blood pressure checked or to participate in a health and wellness presentation. Information regarding care choices and Medicare counseling, as well as referrals for services, are available. Seniors can also visit the Center to enjoy a yoga class with friends, create a greeting card for family members or sing in the gospel choir. |

Seniors and their caregivers can meet with a Registered Nurse or Social Worker in their homes to discuss long-term care plans and needs. During this free evaluation, the consultant will go over eligible services, including Ohio’s Assisted Living Waiver Program, as well as any eligibility requirements. Individuals can also call to speak with a Certified Information and Referral Specialist. Caregivers also have access to assistance through the Caregiver Program, case management and care planning. AAA Region 9 also connects seniors with meaningful volunteer opportunities, instilling a sense of purpose and greater self-worth. |
