Whitley Place, housed in a brick structure with a shingled roof, blends well into the residential area near Highway 377. Expansive lawns flank the building. Residents stroll along the concrete pathway that curves around the facility. The covered entrance is convenient when entering and exiting in inclement weather.
Dark blue carpet covers the floor of the large foyer and contrasts with the off-white walls. Antique lamps and wood furniture upholstered in red and white plaid generate a country atmosphere in the common areas. Sconces and artificial lighting brighten the facility. The hallways are broad enough to allow two wheelchair users to pass one another with ease. Residents’ rooms vary in size from small to spacious and feature large windows. Each bathroom is equipped with a walk-in shower. Some rooms have direct access to the inner courtyard.
Residents spend a great deal of time in the common areas, which are gender-specific, where they watch TV and play games. Many exercise daily. They also enjoy special events, such as performances by the Glenview Baptist Ukulele Band. For the most part, staff members leave the residents in peace, but they are available when needed. The central courtyard features a grill, a picnic area and a wooden gazebo. Multicolored shrubbery decorates the manicured lawn. Young and mature trees provide shade.
Whitley Place chefs prepare homestyle meals such as spaghetti and meatballs, squash, wedge salad and strawberry shortcake. Residents snacked on fruit cocktail and crackers on the day of our tour. Residents often submit recipes to the cooks, the results of which are then served at lunch. Generously sized tables made of light wood add a bright element to the cozy dining area.
