Activities Guide
Underlying Principles
Fun everywhere. Our primary aim is to create an energetic, positive atmosphere for our residents. Our communities are, truly, "Where the FUN Never Sets®." In fact, our activities are so much fun that everyone wants to participate.
Rekindle the memories. Senior adults have "paid their dues" and, in the process, often have forgotten what it's like to just kick back and enjoy life. Our primary mission is to have each and every day become a new memory and reinvigorate daily life.
These are the best years ever. Life should be fun-and we make it that way.
Sample Activities
Our Favorite Activities. In addition to our regular musical presentations, weekly trips and ice cream socials, we have other "special activities" that residents enjoy.
Community Dances. You don't have to come as a couple or bring a date to enjoy these shindigs! Everyone can kick back and relax and dance to the songs they love.
Red Hat Societies. Strictly for the ladies-they meet once a month and take a trip each month.
Red Kap Clubs. Not to be out-done, men in our communities schedule monthly trips and lunches out to boot. Who says girls have more fun?
Church Services and Bible Studies. We have regular Sunday services at all our communities, provided by rotating local pastors and ministers, along with Sunday School classes and week-day Bible studies as well.
Bingo. Everyone's favorite, after all these years.
Lots of Music. Great entertainment, with emcees and "special guests." Other concerts are offered on a regular basis. If you walked in, you might think Ed Sullivan was back with his "really big show"!
Old Time Gospel Singing. Residents love it! Takes them back to another place and time...
Typical Participation Games and Activities.
These activities are held in most communities on a regular basis, selection varies by location. See each location's latest Activity Calendar for a sampling.
The Price is Right. Just like the television show with all the bells and whistles. As with all of our activities, winners actually win prizes but all participants take away some sort of parting gift or consolation prize.
The Not So Newlywed Game. We play the game matching 3 couples and asking them questions sure to get laughter from the audience. A variation is Know Your Neighbor, a game that pairs community friends against others.
Let's Make a Deal. Patterned after the Monty Hall legacy, our version involves a handful of game money, lottery tickets, and prizes. Everyone gets caught up in the excitement.
Name That Tune. Everyone participates. The game starts by playing short segments of tunes (usually show tunes, songs from the 40s and 50s, or television theme songs from the 50s and 60s). We keep score and the winner, of course, wins a prize. Can you name that tune in three notes?
Family Feud. Let the fight begin...! Residents play this fun game, naming the most popular lists.
Regular Physical Activity. Stay fit and have fun. Our exercise programs offer a variety of ways to stay physically active and socialize with your friends.
Exercise. Group exercise, led by a staff member, provides a fun way of staying in shape and "doing what's good for you."
Walking Club. We compile the miles each week and report to the group. Tee shirts are awarded for residents who reach 50 miles, 125 miles, and 250 miles. Stationary bike and treadmill miles are also accepted.
Water Aerobics. This activity is available at the communities and at offsite locations. It promotes flexibility and balance development.
Pool Tournament. An underutilized piece of recreational equipment, the pool table. We've hosted "Minnesota Fats" billiard tournaments, giving prizes to the winners.
"Parlor" Games. Some of our "Parlor" games offered at all our communities on a regular basis. Lessons are provided to those who'd like to play but don't know how.
Skipbo. It has it's loyal following. This card game involves clever strategies and surprise outcomes.
Bridge. We have more and more participating in this great game. Players of all levels are challenged by this popular card game of chance and skill.
Dominoes. Including 42, Mexican Train and Chicken Foot. These highly popular dominoes games are played in tournaments and "just for fun."
Mah Jong. Growing in popularity, this game is the centerpiece of our cultural awareness program.
Bunco. Introduced in the U.S. during the Gold Rush, this game of dice, luck, and prizes is fun for everyone.
Civic and Community Meetings. Each community holds regular Town Hall meetings to discuss issues and events of interest to everyone. We also host various special interest groups, such as AARP, Garden Clubs, Toastmasters, book clubs, etc.
Trips and Outings. Every week, at each of our communities, residents are given the opportunity to stretch in new directions. We take airboat gator tours, train rides, bluebonnet trips, visit casinos and painted churches. The most popular trips get "re-run" from time to time, but we're always open to new ideas as well. Our residents really look forward to these!
Parties and Celebrations. We look for occasions to celebrate! Some of our favorites are Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Fall Festivals, Veteran's Day, 4th of July, and Casino Nights. Birthdays and anniversaries are always remembered as well.
Director's Specials. At each of our communities, the Community Director throws a monthly "theme party" to have fun and celebrate with our residents. The Directors Specials are in addition to all the other festivities described above. Past themes have included Roaring 20s, Safari, Luaus, April in Paris, "spring flings," tailgate parties, catfish fries, and shrimp boils. The food, costumes, music, and entertainment at these events are all geared to that month's theme
