Happy Valentines Day

After church last Sunday, I noticed a peculiar sign in the window of Blockbuster's. It was a photo of those candy hearts we ate in elementary school, chalky pink, with the inscription RENT A traced inside. Most churches, I suppose, are not next to video stores, but mine is.

I pondered this a moment and realized how unexpected it was to see the word "rent" next to a heart, much less inside one. As a renter myself, I deal with the every day glories of sharing a tight garage and thin walls, of wondering how far I can go with my creative house painting.

A few thoughts on home, renting and the heart:

Where we love is home,
Home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.
- Homesick in Heaven, Oliver Wendell Holmes

Home's not merely four square walls,
Though with pictures hung and gilded;
Home is where Affection calls, -
Filled with shrines the Hearth hath builded.
- Home, Charles Swain

And one that's original: I like the idea of renewing contracts, of having the chance to affirm your life or change it. Maybe your rent check every month is a way of saying "This is home."

Here are a few Homestore.com suggestions for the day:

  • Simply call someone you value and tell them that.
  • Volunteer. Need I say more?
  • Send flowers, virtual or real, to someone you love. Virtual Florist works well.
  • Or send a card or e-greeting. E-Greetings and others abound - just use your search engine.
  • Donate computers, art supplies or clothes to your nearest school or charity. They need them.
  • Then buy some flowers for yourself.

    We try at
Homestore.com to make your renting experience a little sweeter, a little easier, and are always looking for things to help. Perhaps the combination inside that candy heart is not such a strange one after all.
