Q: I want to liven up my couch and love seat-in the hopes that this will add some style to the living room as a whole. I do not have much money to spend. Do you have any suggestions?
A: There's a way to get what you want and not have to pay for it. No, I'm not talking about shoplifting. I'm talking about utilizing things that you already have. If you're up for a little change in your apartment, consider recovering your existing throw pillows. This is a simple project that can be completed in a couple of hours---and you do not need to have any sewing skills.
I used some vintage print cloth napkins and some fabric glue to cover my old throw pillows. Instead of using a solid color, I selected a pattern that coordinated with the color scheme of the rest of the room. The flowered pattern has resuscitated my room with a fresh summery look. I have also used old bed pillows for this purpose. They can easily be resized, squared or rolled and used for stuffing and then covered with fabric from an out of date velvet evening dress, scarves, tea towels or whatever. Before you donate that box of old clothes, make sure that there aren't any fabrics that could be reused in your décor projects!
Here are the instructions for an easy throw pillow project:
- Cut two pieces of fabric the size you want. It is okay to mix and match.
- Fold over the edges and glue for a finished look, or choose pre-hemmed napkins and scarves in the size you need.
- Place the squares back to back and glue around the inside edges on three sides.
- Press the edges together with your fingers and let set for 15 minutes.
- Insert the pillow stuffing and then finish with more fabric glue or Velcro self stick tape.
This is an instant way to make a big change for just a little change. Have fun.
